Light: Interrupted

Jan Anderson-Paxon has loved photography all her life. She has worked as a photo-journalist and photo educator, continues to take photographs for the sheer joy of it!

She prefers to work in black and white. She likes to pare the scene down to its essentials of line, shape or form, light and shadow.Light is very important in the photograph. A lot of things can affect the amount and quality of light. The direction of the angle of light changes according to the time of day. When the sun in low in sky, such as in morning, or with the setting sun, that is a much different light than when the sun is straight overhead under a noon-day sun. Something blocking the light such clouds, fog, or water, can also change the quality of light.

When light is blocked in some way, it alters the way things look. It tends to isolate objects. So, some of the photographs play on the juxtaposition of near and far objects. And besides isolating objects, with the light partly obscured, the atmosphere creates a mood of quietness, melancholy, or even a feeling of mystery.
