“I truly believe that art is essential for the flowering of the human psyche and that it enriches our lives and society as a whole. Public art is an integral part of making art available to the people regardless of their socio-economic background. As a sculptor, I am gratified by participating in various public art programs.

As a young man in college I met an accomplished metal sculptor, and this chance meeting would open my eyes to the possibilities of art and being a sculptor. Having already taken welding classes in high school, I began experimenting with various metals, stones, styles and techniques starting with representational sculpture.

All of my sculptures are welded using solar energy. In 2016, I had a 5.2 kilowatt photovoltaic solar array installed, and I now harness the power of the sun to weld my sculptures. I mostly use metal but sometimes juxtapose stone and metal on certain pieces to obtain varying effects. These media are
perfect for both indoor and outdoor display. I enjoy using found objects and discarded metal to repurpose in creating my sculptures. This gives the metal a new life from which it was originally intended. Sometimes the metal I find drives my vision, while other times I have to procure the metal that makes my vision become reality. With extreme heat metal is like putty in my hands, bending to my will.

Going forward, I am exploring more contemporary aspects of my creative vision and expanding my artistic outreach to the public”Anthony St. James
